March 17, 2022. Jessica takes us to Talad Noi. Talad Noi, meaning “small market”, is an old Chinese community in Samphanthawong District, Bangkok. Running parallel to the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, the neighborhood of Talat Noi is home to several historic buildings and temples, charming Chinese-Thai shop-houses and quaint old-time alleyways with street art dotted throughout. The area now known as Talad Noi was originally settled by the Portuguese following the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767. Being the site of Bangkok’s first port, Talad Noi was the natural hub where subsequent waves of immigrants settled. These included Chinese, Vietnamese, Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka ethnic groups. Established for more than 200 years, Talad Noi was the centre of shipping trade until a decline saw many of the local workers commence used car parts businesses in the area which would become known as “Sieng Gong”. Back in Flora Wongsawang, Kiran poses with skateboard. You wouldn’t know it, but he complained very much.
April 8, 2022. Documenting the sleepy life of Flora Wongsawang. A common scene of a cat nestled on a neighbor’s ledge. I asked Mr. Wallop, who was washing one of his cars across the lane, if I could make a portrait of him. I’m sure he thought I was asking him if he wanted a portrait of himself. He politely declined stating that he never has his picture taken.
Walking the grounds of Wat Thang Luang at the end of the next alley over.
